But it?s certainly surprising that?Vicangelo Bulluck who?s currently the Managing Director for the new position of Outreach and Strategic Initiatives at the prestigious Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences used to be a soft porn producer, director, and writer. It?s especially shocking?to the various Academy Governors with 
whom I spoke and who told me they didn?t know anything about his background. His AMPAS hiring coincided with the Academy?s big push spearheaded by CEO Dawn Hudson to focus more on diversity inside and outside the organization and for membership.?AMPAS could not provide me with a description of Bulluck?s current job but he is listed high up on the roster of Academy administration?in 6th place of importance.?An?AMPAS executive who asked not to be identified insisted to me?that Bulluck?s soft porn past did not come as a surprise to the Academy and said, ?We knew this when he was hired. It absolutely gave people pause. But he had enough recent references and great relationships. Besides, he was doing that producing 20 years ago. He was a struggling filmmaker.?
But I?ve learned from insiders that Bulluck prominently displayed his previous non-profit job as?Executive Director of the Hollywood Bureau of the NAACP on the impressive resume he submitted to the Academy at the?NAACP, but he deliberately left off his 10-year soft porn credits.??And when concerned female employees brought this issue to management, they confronted him,? a source tells me. ?He said, ?If it was OK with the NAACP, I thought it?d be OK with you.??Did he get fired for withholding info on his?resume? No. Now there?s a porn producer?at the Academy!? I?m told that, when Kimberly Congdon, the Managing Director of Human Resources at AMPAS, was asked why?she didn?t simply search IMDB for Bulluck?s?credits before he was hired, she replied, ?What?s the IMDB??
Indeed, a search of IMDB for Bulluck?s credits show a prolific list of soft porn?VHS titles ranging in dates from 1992 through?2000 and including Playboy: Sisters, Playboy: The Best of Anna Nicole Smith, Playboy: The Best of Jenny McCarthy, Playboy: The Best of Pamela Anderson,?Playboy Girls of Radio: Talk, Rock and Shock, Playboy: Fabulous Forties, Playboy: Women of Color and?Playboy?s Playmate Bloopers. There?s also a director credit for a 1996 Playboy Home Video?sexploitation film called Jane Street.?Bulluck by all accounts was good at his craft: One reviewer wrote that his ?Girls of Radio is 50,000 watts of incredibly engineered T&A that adds new meaning to the phrase ?drive time?.??And about Jane Street another review wrote: ?Holy hand-grenades does this chick bring it in her single sex scene, so much so that director Vicangelo Bulluck includes a totally accessory moment before her death where she takes a good chunk of time getting dressed and oogling herself in a mirror. Nice!?
Bulluck?in 1994?also?received credits as a writer and co-producer on the televised 26th, 28th, and 30th NAACP Image Awards and was able to leave his soft porn past behind by 2001.?Just prior to joining AMPAS, he lists that he was an Executive Producer at Telepictures.?Before then, he worked at the NAACP from March 2001 for 12 years?where he wrote that his job was to ?manage the NAACP?s diversity initiatives in Hollywood. Establish and maintain strategic relationships with studios, networks, talent, record labels, and guilds to advance the organization?s diversity initiatives in the entertainment industry. Manage the Bureau?s budget, staff and management activities in conjunction with corporate headquarters.?
Bulluck?s resume also lists: ?Nielsen Media Research ? Currently Co-Chair of African American Advisory Council. Have worked with Nielsen on the African American Advisory Council since 2006. USC Gould School of Law ? Guest lecturer/Entertainment Law, UCLA Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media ? Guest lecturer, UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies ? Guest lecturer. Honors and Awards:?The Foundation For Ethnic Understanding ? Joseph Papp Racial Harmony Award, California Legislature Assembly and the California State Assembly ? Recognized for distinguished professional accomplishments and commitment to quality cultural entertainment.?
No recent articles about Bulluck mention his soft porn past, not in publicity for the NAACP Image Awards shows or a February 2009 profile in The Hollywood Reporter?about his ?mission?advocating for the involvement and representation of minorities in entertainment?.?The article wrote that Bulluck ?has been working in entertainment since he was an interdisciplinary major at USC, studying cinema, journalism, philosophy and theater ? ?I was actually paid to write my first screenplay before I left college,? he says ? and his involvement with the NAACP came just as quickly. What began with a stint as a production assistant on the Image Awards evolved into a career: Bulluck has been producing the show since 1986, and six years ago, he became what he calls a ?small footnote in civil rights history? when he opened the Hollywood Bureau and became its first executive director.? Though the article does mention his past as an ?independent producer?, no soft porn credits are mentioned.
