Leading Senate Democrat: IRS behavior intolerable

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A leading Senate Democrat says the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups was intolerable, and he is promising to get to the bottom of how it happened.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus made his remark Tuesday as his panel began Congress' second hearing on the extra scrutiny the IRS gave tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

The Montana Democrat says his committee will follow the facts wherever they lead.

Scheduled to testify to Congress for the first time was former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman, who headed the agency for most of the period when it was improperly focusing on the conservative groups.

Ed Carpenter earns Indy 500 pole

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Ed Carpenter turned Pole Day into a family celebration.

The stepson of IndyCar founder Tony George became the first member of the Hulman family to win the biggest pre-race event in the series ? the Indianapolis 500 pole.

Carpenter produced a stunning finish to a day that was rife with suspense but lacked surprise. His four-lap average of 228.762 mph was quick enough to break up what appeared to be a Team Penske-Andretti Autosport lock on the front three rows in the nine-car shootout for the pole.

Somehow, Carpenter, who owns his team, beat out the big-name guys.

"To be a single-car team in this Chevy shootout, I am going to call it fighting with the Penske and Andretti guys," said Carpenter, whose pit crew carried him off pit road on their shoulders after an agonizing wait to see if his time would hold up.

The soft-spoken Carpenter grew up around the world-famous 2.5-mile Brickyard, dreaming of the moment he could stand in Victory Lane. Perhaps that will happen May 26.

For now, Carpenter will savor the highest-profile achievement of his career and during a month in which he has strengthened his area ties. His sponsor, golfer Fuzzy Zoeller's Fuzzy's Vodka, is based in Indiana and this week Carpenter added decals to his car from his alma mater, Butler University ? the little school that made two straight NCAA championship game appearances.

He also took a little time out for his family and friends, who believe this could be his big year at Indy.

After producing the fastest lap in the opening practice session last Saturday, Carpenter gave away his tickets to watch the Eastern Conference semifinals between the hometown Pacers and New York Knicks so he could spend some time with his wife before another working Mother's Day.

And during Friday night's qualifying draw, Carpenter had one of his young children pull out the number.

Then Carpenter went out and beat all those big-name guys to the punch, setting off a celebration that isn't likely to end any time soon.

"I felt like coming in that we had a chance to be on the pole," Carpenter said. "To sit on the pole for this race is really a dream come true, and I hope it is a start to what has already been a great month of May. The car has been great and I can't thank my team enough. The sponsors, a lot of great people helped us get here. This is just the first part of what we are here to do."

Carpenter was followed by three of Michael Andretti's five drivers ? rookie Carlos Munoz of Colombia, Marco Andretti and Venezuelan E.J. Viso took the next three spots. Munoz's average of 228.342 was just a tick better than Marco Andretti's 228.261.

"We knew he was a factor, but those laps were really stout," said Andretti, who congratulated Carpenter on pit road. "We didn't see that kind of pace out of him earlier, but he went for a trim and balanced the car, so it rewarded him."

Another Indy rookie, AJ Allmendinger, will start fifth, the highest qualifier for Roger Penske's team.

Will Power went into the shootout as the favorite after going 228.844 but wound up starting sixth, the outside of Row 2 after slowing to 227.246 mph on the final run of the day.

"We took everything off and went for it," Power said. "Even the last two corners, you're like, man, I don't know whether this thing is going to stick. But good fun, and it's good to be starting on the second row and we'll see what we can do."

It was yet another frustrating moment for Power, who thought he might eclipse 230 after his early afternoon run. That came just 48 hours after Power seemed resigned to not even be in pole contention.

But racing has not always been good to Power. Despite winning 21 poles and 14 races from 2010-12, Power finished second in the points to Dario Franchitti all three years.

Indy has followed the same trend line. In five previous starts on the oval, Power has only started on the front row once ? when he started second in 2010 when he was overshadowed by his pole-winning teammate, Helio Castroneves. Power has never finished better than fifth on race day even though he completed 799 of 800 laps in his first four starts. Last year, he went out in a crash after 78 laps.

The team's dramatic improvement over the previous 48 hours had some thinking that Penske would extend his own record by winning an 18th pole.

Others expected Andretti to top the list.

Carpenter never bought into it.

"That's an accomplishment in itself," Carpenter said. "For this team to put in the hard work to give me what I needed to put it on the pole is great. I think a whole lot of prayers went into this day."

There weren't many surprises.

Each of the nine drivers in the shootout were powered by the strong Chevrolet engines. That left the Honda teams, including all four drivers for Chip Ganassi's heavyweight team ? Australian Ryan Briscoe, New Zealand's Scott Dixon, Scotland's Franchitti and American Charlie Kimball ? out of the front three rows. Franchitti, like Castroneves, is trying to become the fourth member of the four-time winners club and will start from the middle of the sixth row, 17th, after going 226.069.

Also out of pole contention was points leader Takuma Sato of Japan. He posted a four-lap average of 225.892 and will start 18th, the outside of Row 6.

Eight drivers qualified but were later bumped out of the top 24 starting spots. Jakes and Briscoe were the only ones to make it back in.

The list of drivers still trying to make the field includes 1996 Indy winner Buddy Lazier, British driver Pippa Mann, who hasn't raced since suffering injuries in the tragic season-ending race at Las Vegas in 2011 and Brazil's Ana Beatriz. Mann and Beatriz, who drive for Dale Coyne Racing, are trying to become the first female teammates to start the 500.

Two drivers, Conor Daly and Michel Jourdain Jr., weren't quick enough to even qualify for the 33-car starting field and James Jakes' first qualifying attempt was later disqualified after failing post-qualifying inspection. Jakes tried to re-qualify two more times, finally making it into the 24th spot late in the day.

The final nine starting spots will be filled during the second and final day of qualifications Sunday ? a day Britain's Katherine Legge is expected to complete her first laps since being hired by Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to drive the No. 81 car. The late addition gives race organizers 34 driver-car combinations, meaning one driver won't start May 26.

And now Carpenter will be leading them into the first turn.

"I love it here," he said. "I love racing here. I love going fast here. ... But this track means a lot to the other 32 guys that are going to start the race, too. I don't think it's just special to me."

5,800 Acres of Kau Land Up For Auction | Big Island Real Estate

Kau Coffee Farms, Photo by Julia Neal

A foreclosure auction for more than 5,800 acres of Kau land is scheduled to be held at noon on May 21, 2013 at the First Circuit Court Building in Honolulu.? The land includes pastures, coffee farms, coastal land, as well as several homes and lots.? The county appraised the value at $13.6 million and the remaining mortgage is $59.7 million.? There is no upset price on the property.

How did such a large amount of land end up in foreclosure?? Well, it all started in 2006.? Alan Worden led a resort development group which included Windwalker Hawaii and WWK Hawaii Holdings to purchase the Kau land.? They had planned to subdivide the land into 20 acre lots, build infrastructure such as roads, and acquire permits to construct high-end homes on farm land.? In order to develop the land Windwalker Hawaii borrowed $44.7 million from Lehman Brothers Holdings against the property.

In 2008 Lehman Brothers filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (the largest bankruptcy in US history) and stopped funding the loan.? Without the required monies Worden and his development group were unable to continue developing the project or even pay many contractors who had already done a fair amount of work for them.

Worden?s group filed a motion with the US Bankruptcy Court in New York asking permission to seek an alternative form of funding.? The motion stated, ?Lehman?s failure to fund the project?s operating costs has thus severely disrupted the project?s ability to obtain necessary permits and has been so devastating that the Hawaii borrowers? damages may exceed the amount borrowed.?

After six years of struggling the project has finally come to a halt and the Kau land will be auctioned off.? Chris Manfredi of Windwalker Hawaii said, ?I was here before Lehman, and I will be here after? The community has treated me as `ohana, and I will continue to do all I can to continue to advance our community through agriculture.?

(AP) ? The magic and glamour of Cannes can be hard to spot on a day when rain is lashing the palm trees, roiling the gray Mediterranean and pooling in puddles along the Croisette.

But the world's leading film festival can transform careers ? something no one knows that better than actors Berenice Bejo and Tahar Rahim, stars of director Asghar Farhadi's festival entry "The Past."

Bejo shimmered on-screen in Cannes two years ago in "The Artist," her director husband Michel Hazanavicius' vivacious silent homage to Hollywood's Golden Age. It went on to win five Academy Awards, including best picture.

Rahim was the breakout star of the 2009 festival in Jacques Audiard's poetic and brutal prison drama "A Prophet," as a youth growing to manhood behind bars.

Cannes exposure helped boost both performers onto the international stage. While once most European actors could choose between stay at home and playing Hollywood villains, their paths suggest a more globalized movie world.

"It was quite a miracle for me," Bejo said Saturday, as rain drummed remorselessly on a Cannes rooftop lounge. "Two years ago my life changed a little bit in Cannes.

"I don't think Asghar Farhadi would have cast me in this movie if I hadn't done 'The Artist.'"

It's hard to think of two movie styles further apart than the flamboyant artifice of "The Artist" and the anatomically detailed domestic drama of "The Past"

Bejo plays Marie, a harried Frenchwoman with two children, a new boyfriend with a young son, and an Iranian ex who has returned after four years to finalize their divorce. Rahim is her boyfriend Samir, a man with complex family ties of his own.

All the characters are trying to move on ? but the past keeps dragging them back.

Bejo said she did a screen test for Farhadi, then didn't hear from him for a month, so initially thought she hadn't got the part.

"He said to me, I was looking into your face if I could see the doubt," she said. "I guess because he saw me in movies where I was quite positive, quite sunny, quite glamorous. He needed to see if I could show another part of myself ? and I guess he found it."

For Bejo, as for Rahim, working with the Iran director was a dream come true. "The Past" is the first film Farhadi has shot outside his homeland, and the actors say they loved his working methods ? two months of rehearsal to delve into character, break down barriers and forge bonds, followed by a four-month shoot.

With its Iranian director and largely French cast, it's one of several border-hopping movies at Cannes this year. French director Arnaud Desplechin's made-in-America "Jimmy P.: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian" stars France's Mathieu Amalric and Puerto Rican actor Benicio Del Toro. Another French filmmaker, Guillaume Canet, has a multinational cast including Clive Owen, Billy Crudup and Marion Cotillard in his New York crime drama "Blood Ties."

It's a trend Bejo is happy to embrace.

"In America you have Christoph Waltz, you have Marion Cotillard," she said. "In France we have Italian and Spanish actors. ... I think it's great. We are used to strangers and foreign accents, and it's great that we can see that in our movies now."

Both she and Rahim have been busy since their Cannes breakthroughs. Bejo recently made French heist movie "The Last Diamond" and soon starts filming Hazanavicius' next project, a war movie set in Chechnya.

Rahim's projects include the English-language Roman-era adventure "The Eagle" and another movie appearing at Cannes this year, the nuclear power plant romance "Grand Central."

Coming up, he plays a cop in the French movie "The Informant," and is currently shooting a globe-spanning 1920s-set drama with Turkish-German director Fatih Akin, another pillar of culture-crossing cinema.

Despite the busy international career ? and post-"Prophet" expressions of interest from the United States ? Rahim says Hollywood remains a hard nut to crack for non-Anglophone actors.

"It's not what you expect at first," Rahim said. "You'd like to be with Michael Mann or (directors) like this, but you don't have those parts that easily. Because first you have to speak English, you have to erase your accent."

For now, he's just happy to be back in Cannes, an experience that is easier the second time around.

"The difference is that now I'm not afraid when I come here," he said. "I'm (saying) 'OK I'm going to take every good vibe and keep it.'"

Swiss Cheese and Dust Devils: 7 High-Resolution Shots of Surface Activity on Mars [Slide Show]

The Red Planet is frigid and possibly sterile, but its surface still sees plenty of action

The arrival of NASA?s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) at the Red Planet in 2006 ushered in a whole new era of Mars observation. With its ultrapowerful HiRISE camera, the orbiter has spied on the Martian surface to study curious features, some of them possibly linked to the presence of water, in unprecedented detail. And along the way HiRISE has also uncovered a few new phenomena.

At the top of that list are recurring slope lineae (RSL), which HiRISE scientists discovered in 2011. RSL are dark lines that appear during the warm season on southern slopes, spread gradually downward and then fade as the weather turns cold again. The behavior of RSL suggests that they are caused by flows of briny liquid water, which, if confirmed, would stir new hopes for current life on Mars.

Click here for a slide show of some of Mars?s most interesting surface features, including animated gifs of recurring slope lineae growing and fading from one season to the next, as documented from orbit by the HiRISE camera.

S&P warns of downgrade, government not too worried

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS) Ratings agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) Friday said its outlook on India remained negative and there is a one-in-three chance of a downgrade within the next 12 months. But the government asserted that there is nothing to worry about as it is taking the right measures to keep the country on a sustainable growth path.

"The outlook on the long-term rating remains negative," S&P said in a report, affirming its 'BBB minus' long-term and 'A-3' short-term unsolicited sovereign credit ratings on India.

This is the lowest investment grade rating. Any downgrade would take India's sovereign ratings to junk status, making overseas borrowings difficult and costlier.

The agency's ratings came just within a month of the government's meeting with the representatives of S&P here during which it made a strong pitch for an upgrade.

The Indian government expressed disappointment over the observations of the ratings agency and said it would continue to take steps to boost economic growth and curb deficits.

"I think it is a narrow way of looking at reforms," Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram told reporters here.

"We are on the right track, and I don't think there is anything to worry about," said Mayaram.

Added chief economic advisor in the finance ministry Raghuram Rajan: "It is disappointing that S&P has not seen it fit to improve its outlook for India, especially given that it acknowledges the important steps taken by the Indian government in recent months."

"International institutional investors, who have invested over $17 billion into India so far this year, do seem to have a different view. The government will continue to do what is necessary to keep India on a stable, sustainable, and strengthening growth path," Rajan said in a statement.

S&P's report came at a time when Finance Minister P. Chidambaram was in Paris to woo overseas investors by selling India's growth story.

The agency, however, said there was scope to upgrade India's sovereign ratings if the government unleashes public and private investments to spur economic growth.

"High fiscal deficits and a heavy government debt burden remain the most significant constraints on our sovereign ratings on India. Nevertheless, the government has regained control of public finances and embarked on fresh structural reforms since September 2012," S&P credit analyst Takahira Ogawa said.

India's long-term growth prospects, underpinned by its favourable demographic profile, and its high foreign exchange reserves support the ratings. The country's large fiscal deficit and debt, as well as its lower middle-income economy, constrain the ratings, S&P said.

The negative outlook signals at least a one-in-three likelihood of a downgrade within the next 12 months.

"We may lower the rating if we conclude that slower government reforms than we currently expect would not lead economic growth to recover to levels experienced earlier this decade," it said.

"Such a conclusion could come from anaemic investment growth, reversals on diesel or other subsidy measures, or inability to increase electricity supply to meet increasing demand. Similarly, if India's general government fiscal or current account deficits worsen contrary to our expectations, we may lower the ratings," it added.

According to the ratings agency, India's real GDP per capita growth is likely to rebound to 4.6 percent in the current financial year from 3.6 percent in the previous year.

These are higher than those of most of its peers' but substantially lower than about 6 percent on average over the five years up to the fiscal year ended March 2012, it said.

"We may revise the outlook to stable if the government carries through with its plans to unleash public and private investments, to implement a nationwide government sales tax, or to further trim fuel and fertilizer subsidies," it said.

"We believe these measures could restore India's robust growth, and thereby ameliorate its public debt trajectory," the agency said.

Business Plan For Fitness Center What You Need to Know About ...

If you posses a health club you should find out how to debunk the many fitness misconceptions to have potential customers. Likewise ensure you have a good fitness center marketing in the general system to be able to grow. There is so much investigative efforts and studies in healthy lifestyles and fitness, it?s hard to keep up with the volumes of research. Amazing as it seems, there are some who think everything on the internet are facts. There is no end to the numbers of people who are gullible and continue believing in the hype marketing claims. What follows are three specific areas in which false claims have been made, and you can discover the truth and do your own research, of course.

Myth about bread crust is that it is loaded with all the good stuff your body needs, so eat it. Sure, there are some healthy components in crust but not the powerhouse stuff. There are some wheat breads that are much different than the rest, so you have to pick the one you like most. Actually, the crusts of wheat bread are no doubt healthier than an entire slice of white bread, and it will not stick in your gut like white paste bread.

Getting past the smell of fish to eat it is half the battle, and of course some fish have excellent nutrition to support brain function and others. Try out fish on your children and see who likes and who does not, and what you can do is feed them salmon and create it in a tasty way. Most fish are very good for you, but if you are familiar with the issues you will know that salmon is terrific. You can help to maintain your health in so many functions with salmon?s Omega ? 3 fatty acids. There are very many different kinds of omega supplements on the market, so just make sure you get a high quality form.

You may find it ultimately to be not true that weight loss efforts will be smoother and more effective by getting rid of gluten in your diet. This is just another crazy thing to come out of who knows where, but the important point is that it is not true and never will be. There is no connection to the two (losing fat and gluten), and this should be good news for you if you have been avoiding it for that reason, alone.

The biggest clue with losing weight is being active, and how earth shattering is that? People are just lazy, and that?s about it. Any time you are at a crossroads with your health, then you know what the best course of action is ? call your doctor and pay a visit. We are wise to seek the truth and to debunk myths and generally stay informed. But still, you know there are falsehoods out there. Do not be skittish with doing your own research and discovering even more truths. Do you think this is it about truths? Not a chance, so that means there is much more to the stories.

Lenovo's Intelpowered K900 smartphone on sale now in China, ships internationally this summer

It arrived with a bang, but it's been dead silence ever since. Lenovo's Intel Clover+ smartphone, the Android-based K900, is finally ready to make its grand entrance into the consumer realm. The 5.5-inch powerhouse will ship with a dual-core Atom Z2580 CPU (2.0GHz) within, a PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU, a 1080p IPS panel slipped behind a coating of Gorilla Glass 2 and a 13 megapixel camera. Despite the sizable display, it weighs just 162 grams and measures 6.9 millimeters thick, and should be available across greater China right now for RMB 3,299 (around $536) -- or RMB 2,999 if you're lucky. For those outside of Lenovo's homeland, you'll need to wait until summer for it to hit an unspecified amount of "international markets."

Conn. chef set to feast on cicadas during invasion

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Connecticut chef Bun Lai is already known for his Mexican grasshopper dish and his fried rice with meal worms and crickets. But he might soon also be recognized as the cicada chef.

Lai, owner of Miya's Sushi, tells the New Haven Register (http://bit.ly/16eNZfy ) that he plans to fill a big freezer full of Brood II cicadas, once the red-eyed bugs' 17-year life cycle brings them above ground for about five weeks.

"I'm going to catch a whole bunch of them and preserve them for future eating," he said. "I plan on eating a whole bunch of them myself."

Lai said cicadas, and insects in general have great nutritional value and are "healthier for our bodies than eating meat."

He plans to feature the cicada in some theme dishes, steaming some of the bugs and boiling others, with the appropriate spices and herbs.

"I don't want to take something that's inherently nutritious and deep fry it," he explained. "If I'm going to interrupt this amazing, 17-year life cycle, I'm going to honor it and respect it."

Lai tells the Register that he sees it as a challenge to take something that's abundant and nourishing and make it appealing, not to mention tasty.

"I'm not trying to gross people out," he said. "I'm not running a frat house. I respect the cicada."

White House reaction to IRS scandal: Too little, too late?

President Barack Obama forced out the acting IRS commissioner on Wednesday in response to allegations the agency had inappropriately targeted conservative groups. Critics have said the IRS scandal is just one of a series of incidents where the Obama administration has avoided taking responsibility.

With no sign of an end to three mushrooming scandals, the?White House?acknowledged the rising political dangers on Wednesday by launching a concerted effort at damage control.

In a whirlwind few hours, the administration moved forcefully to counter criticism of its handling of the deadly attacks in?Benghazi,?Libya, the seizure of reporters' phone records in a Justice Department leak investigation, and the?Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups for extra scrutiny.

In the most aggressive response, President?Barack Obama?ousted the acting IRS?commissioner on Wednesday evening.

It was the sort of concerted response that Obama's political allies had been waiting for, but Republicans' skeptical reaction shows that Obama has a long way to go to dig his way out of the scandals and build goodwill as he tries to salvage his second-term legislative agenda.

"This was a belated acknowledgment that Obama is in trouble," said?Jack Pitney, a politics professor at Claremont McKenna College in?California. "The question is whether it was too little, too late."

After a largely scandal-free first term, the administration had been slow to respond decisively to the growing criticism - mostly from Republican foes but in some cases from Democrats - in the three controversies.

Days of deflecting blame by administration officials had sparked criticism of Obama's willingness to accept responsibility. During a House?Judiciary Committee?hearing on Wednesday afternoon with U.S. Attorney General?Eric Holder, Republicans repeatedly attacked the administration for not being forthright on the emerging scandals.

"I believe there has been a pattern by this administration in not taking responsibility for failures, avoiding blame, pointing the fingers in somebody else's direction," said U.S. Representative?Steve Chabot, a Republican from?Ohio.

But Obama, known for his deliberative style and an aversion to overreacting, decided on Wednesday it was time to fight back.

Appearing at the?White House, he said the administration had forced the resignation of acting IRS?Commissioner?Steven Miller?and he strongly condemned the agency's apparent targeting of conservative groups for extra scrutiny. He promised to cooperate with?Congress?in an investigation.

During the 2013 Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual conference focused on human rights, a new piece of spyware was discovered on an attendee's Mac. The spyware, which was discovered by security researcher Jacob Appelbaum, is currently being analyzed by F-Secure to fully understand what it does.

Appelbaum discovered the backdoor during a workshop in which freedom of speech activists could learn how to protect their devices from government monitoring. An interesting property of the spyware is that it?s actually signed with an Apple Developer ID. The use of Developer IDs for signing software is meant to prevent users from installing known malicious software, but isn't effective against newly discovered malware. Fortunately, now that the malware is known, Apple should be able to block installation of the malware by more users, and may have already done so.

What is known so far about the spyware is that it will add itself to the list of applications that are launched when the user logs in, ensuring it runs every time the victim logs in to their computer. While running, the spyware takes periodic screenshots and stores them in a directory called MacApp that is created in the user?s home directory. Information was also uncovered about two C&C (command-and-control) servers likely used by the spyware. C&C servers allow for malicious software to receive instructions from the spyware?s author(s).

While the full impact of the spyware is not currently known, hopefully its reach is restricted by security features introduced with Gatekeeper. And with Apple's ability to block further installations of the spyware, the risk to other users should soon be mitigated.

Porsche 918 Spyder: The Shape of Supercars to Come

Driving down the pit lane of Porsche's test track outside the company's Leipzig, Germany, factory, 918 Spyder prototype No. 25 is nearly silent as its runs on electric power. Exiting onto the track, the faint whine of the electric motors grows louder as we approach 94 miles per hour, the electric-mode limit. Finally, the midmounted 4.6-liter V-8 engine roars to life, the exhaust pipes booming inches behind my head.

The 918 Spyder is Porsche's next supercar, following in the footsteps of the Carrera GT, the 911 GT1, and the 959. It's an 887-hp plug-in electric hybrid that proves performance and efficiency are not mutually exclusive. As project leader Frank-Steffan Walliser explains: "For the first time, the technical solutions support both lap time and fuel consumption."

After several laps behind the wheel and a full day investigating what makes it work, we're convinced that the 918 points the way to a bright future for sports cars despite ever-tightening fuel-economy and emissions standards. And while this $845,000 car is out of reach even for rich people, the lessons learned will make their way down to more affordable rides.

Google unveils maps, photo, music features

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's sixth annual conference for software developers opened Wednesday with a chance for the company to showcase its latest services. Announcements include new features for online games, maps and search, a new music-streaming service and enhancements to its Google Plus social network, including tools for sharing and enhancing photos.

The audience of about 6,000 people at "Google I/O" includes engineers and entrepreneurs who develop applications and other features that can make smartphones and tablets more appealing. Reporters from around the world also will be on hand, giving Google a chance to generate more hoopla about its latest innovations.

Android already has been activated on 900 million devices made by Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and other manufacturers. Android devices are the chief rivals to Apple's iPhones and iPads. Android has helped Google make more money because its search engine and other services, including maps, are usually built into the devices. That tie-in drives more visitors to Google and gives the Mountain View, Calif., company more opportunities to sell ads.

Google's conference was being held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The keynote kicked off at about 9 a.m. PDT and was expected to last nearly three hours. The conference goes through Friday.

Here's a running account of the event, presented in reverse chronological order. All times are PDT. Presenters include CEO Larry Page; Vic Gundotra, Google's senior vice president for engineering; Sundar Pichai, the head of Google's senior vice president for apps and the Chrome operating system for laptops; Hugo Barra, vice president for product management at Android; Ellie Powers, a product manager at Google; Brian McClendon, a vice president who oversees Google Maps; and Daniel Graf, director of Google Maps.

___

11:55 a.m.

Page complains about "the negativity of stories" in the news media. He says, "negativity isn't how we make progress. It's not zero-sum." He describes as "dumb" the stories that focus on rivalries, such as one between Google and Apple.

He also mentions his vision of driverless cars that will save people time and notes that "we are just scratching the surface of what is possible." Page says Google cooperated with Hollywood for the upcoming movie "The Internship" in order to address "a marketing problem" with technology.

___

11:45 a.m.

Page appears on stage, a day after the CEO disclosed a problem with his vocal cords that makes it difficult for him to speak and breathe occasionally. Page has said he remains fit enough to keep running Google. Page doesn't always appear at Google conferences, and his appearance Wednesday could be meant to reassure people.

On stage, he talks about how his dad was interested in technology and once drove him across the country to attend a robotics conference. He says it's important to focus on technology and get more people involved.

He says, "Technology should do the hard work so people can get on doing the things that make them happiest in life."

His voice sounds raspy, but that is usual.

___

11:40 a.m.

Google is also making images from its Google Earth service available on the Web browser. Before, you had to install separate software to use Google Earth. Google also demonstrates the ability to see a view of earth from space and rotate it around.

___

11:30 a.m.

Google introduces new features for its mapping apps on Android devices and iPhones.

When you search for restaurants in a city or neighborhood, you'll get the names of the restaurants along with its ratings at the bottom of the screen. You can swipe through the results horizontally. The mapping app will also include Google Offers ? deals akin to those from Groupon Inc. and LivingSocial.

___

11:20 a.m.

McClendon says Google has been trying to make its mapping services more useful by combining data from authoritative sources and using contributions from users. He says Google recently added more details on North Korea, with more listings of streets and parks rather than just a river and the city's name.

Graf takes a jab at Apple in talking about the success Google's mapping app has had on iPhones. Apple replaced Google's mapping service with its own app last fall. It resulted in complaints about inaccuracies and missing features. Google returned with its own mapping app a few months later. At Wednesday's conference, Graf points out that its app is "let's not forget, accurate."

___

11:05 a.m.

Google is trying to integrate what it knows about users with its search function, so it can reply to questions like "What's my gate number?" or "my restaurant reservation."

Google already makes this available through its Google Now service on Android devices, iPhones and iPads. Now, it's available to anyone using its Chrome browser on traditional computers.

___

10:50 a.m.

Google unveils several tools for sharing photos on its Google Plus social network.

One feature will pick out the best shots from a wide assortment of photos. Just upload a bunch, and Google's machines will reject ones that are blurry or don't have people smiling. Another factor is Google's knowledge of who's important to you ? so family members or close friends are more likely to make the cut.

If the photos don't look quite right, Google is promising to enhance them, taking over a job that typically requires people to use special photo-editing software such as Adobe System Inc.'s Photoshop, Apple's iPhoto or Google's Picasa. Computer-controlled editing tools will automatically soften skin tones and sharpen colors, for instance.

Google is also expanding the storage limit for full-resolution photos. Instead of five gigabytes for free per account, you'll get 15 gigabytes. Gundotra says that when you have an important photo, you don't want to sacrifice its quality to save space.

___

10:40 a.m.

Google is introducing 41 new features to its Google Plus social network, which Google is positioning as an alternative to Facebook.

Among them is a newly designed stream of content ? one designed to be dynamic, rather than a long list seen in Facebook.

Google Plus will start to display automatic hash tags to identify the main topic being discussed in a post or featured in a photo. You'll have the option to turn it off or remove it for a specific post. Google will also help you discover content by pulling up other posts with that hash tag. Facebook doesn't currently use hash tags.

Google is also streamlining its communications tools, offering a new app to combine its chat and Hangout services. Gundotra notes that Google's own services can be fragmented and confusing at time. The new app is designed to address that and can keep a record of past conversations. It will be available for Android and Apple devices, as well as regular Web browsers on computers.

The changes will start appearing Wednesday afternoon.

___

10:25 a.m.

Google unveils a program to get Android tablets into schools. One feature will allow educators to distribute an app to hundreds of tablets with a single click. Schools will able to pay for apps by charging against an account set up ahead of time. Normally, a credit card is required.

Google says Google Play for Education will launch this fall.

___

10:20 a.m.

Everyone in the audience is getting a free Chromebook Pixel, a high-end laptop developed by Google. It has a high-resolution touch-screen display and usually carries a high price tag ? starting at $1,299. It runs Google's Chrome operating system, which is meant mostly for online use.

Google has said that selling Pixels isn't the company's main goal with the machine. Rather, the company made it to showcase Google's vision for the future of computing. So giving Pixels away to engineers and entrepreneurs is consistent with that strategy.

___

10:15 a.m.

Google demonstrates the ability to play games simultaneously on its Chrome browser. Everything stays in sync even though the devices used varied.

___

10:10 a.m.

Google's stock broke $900 for the first time shortly before the conference started. At 10:10 a.m. PDT (1:10 p.m. EDT), it was up $18.72, or 2.1 percent, at $905.84. Google's market value also surpassed $300 billion for the first time.

___

10 a.m.

There's a new phone from Google. It will run on a newer version of the Android operating system, version 4.2. The Android version will still be called Jelly Bean, rather than Key Lime Pie ? the next in a series of dessert-themed code names.

It will be unlocked, meaning it will work with any carrier, including those abroad. But it also means the price won't be subsidized by the carrier. Google will sell it for $649 starting June 26, rather than the usual $200 or so with a two-year contract.

Google says the new phone is a variant of Samsung's Galaxy S4 phone, which was recently released.

Google also says that the new phone will be able to get Android updates as we come. U.S. carriers sometimes block those updates from getting to locked phones.

___

9:50 a.m.

Google unveils a music service called All Access. The streaming service will allow Android users to listen to their favorite songs and artists for a monthly fee.

Google wants to not only offer access to millions of songs, but also help guide you to music you might like. You can choose one of 22 music genres and see key albums that define the genre along with recommendations from Google's curators. You can listen to any track right away, or switch to a "radio station" format featuring songs you'll likely want to hear. You can adjust the playlist as you go.

The cost is $9.99 a month in the U.S., after a 30-day free trial. It launches in the U.S. Wednesday. If you start the trial by June 30, the monthly fee will drop to $7.99. It will be available in other countries later.

Google's All Access will be competing with Spotify and other popular music services.

___

9:45 a.m.

Google says its online Play store will make recommendations for apps, books, movies and music based on the device you are using. After all, what works well on a tablet might not on a phone.

___

9:40 a.m.

Powers introduces a service to help software developers get more users and make more money through their apps.

It will tell a developer, for instance, that an app is particularly popular in Russia, so that the developer could consider making a Russian-language version. Google is offering an app-translation service to help with that.

Another feature is designed to help developers understand how effective their ads are in getting people to download their apps.

___

9:30 a.m.

Google unveils a tool to help software developers make sure their apps work well on different screen sizes. That's important because some people use phones and others use mid-size or larger tablets. Developers will want to make sure their apps are pleasant across the board.

___

9:25 a.m.

Google introduces a technology for syncing notifications on different devices. The idea is when you dismiss a notification about a new Facebook message, for instance, it wouldn't reappear when you check your tablet.

Google also unveils new gaming tools. You can save where you are in a game and pick up on another device. You can also see how you rank on new leaderboards. This appears similar to what Apple offers on iPhones and iPads through its Game Center. Getting into gaming gives Google an opportunity to participate in one of the most popular activities on mobile devices.

___

9:20 a.m.

Barra introduces a few tools for software developers to incorporate into their apps. One allows apps to track what users are doing, such as walking. It may appear creepy to users, but Barra says the tools will allow developers to create "a whole new category of awesome apps."

___

9:10 a.m.

Pichai talks about Google having two large, fast-growing platforms: Android for smartphones and tablets and Chrome for laptops.

He says Android has grown from being on 100 million devices in 2011, 400 million in 2012 to 900 million now. He calls the growth "extraordinary." He suggests there's still room for growth with 7 billion people in the world.

___

9 a.m.

After a brief multimedia presentation, Gundotra appears on stage to open the conference.

Evernote Launches Business Service for Yinxiang ... - The Next Web

One year to the day since it launched its dedicated business in China ??Yinxiang Biji ? Evernote has deepened its push into the country after launching Evernote Business platform, its services dedicated to serving business users, there.

Speaking at the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing ? the same venue as last year?s launch ? Evernote CEO explained why the company is bringing the business service to China at this time, having crossed 4 million registered?Yinxiang Biji users.

?The timing for Evernote Business couldn?t be better,? Libin said, explaining that companies are blossoming in China, from Beijing to Chengdu, with most only beginning to dip their toes into the world of enterprise software. ?There are going to be millions of companies that will adopt serious productivity software for the first time.?

Huge opportunity

Libin is confident that Evernote Business is the answer, and that its early entry?into the country will help the service to become the de-facto productivity tool for Chinese companies. Interestingly, he believes that putting the right tools into Chinese business? hands is far easier than convincing businesses in US and other Western markets of the merits of Evernote?s enterprise-focused solution.

?The huge advantage in China, unlike the US, is that these companies aren?t burdened by 20 years of horrible IT decisions. They don?t have all this crappy enterprise software that they can?t get rid of,? says Libin, pointing out that the lack of legacies is a huge mark in Evernote?s favor.

Since launching Evernote Business in December 2012, the company has rapidly expanded the product through a phased rollout over the course of several months. Right now, the service is available in 76 countries ? 77 including China ? and is being used by more than 5,000 businesses worldwide.

libin 730x365 Evernote launches its business platform in China, as local Yinxiang Biji service crosses 4m users

Going against the norm of tailoring for China

China was always part of the plan for the business service, Libin explains, although the logistics of the country meant that the launch has taken a few months to set up. That?s due to the need for support, training, billing and other dedicated local services and systems.

?We had to make sure that the experience for Chinese companies would be just as good as it is for US companies,? Libin explains.

Indeed, the Evernote Business service in China won?t differ at all from what?s already offered elsewhere. The platform will continue to offer Business notebooks for separating personal documents from work documents, as well as a collaborative Business Library for sharing notes among co-workers.

The only slight difference is cost. In the US, Evernote Business costs $10 per user per month, but in China it is priced a fraction cheaper at 60 RMB ($9.74) per user per month, or 688 RMB ($111.72) per year.

That is notable because many Western companies believe that, in order run a successful business in China, they first need to revamp their product to satisfy Chinese consumption habits. In this regard, Evernote?s philosophy is quite a break from the usual.

?All the conventional wisdom when we were going into China was, ?This isn?t going to work; you can?t do the same thing you do in China as everywhere else. You have to do something different. The tastes are different, businesses are different, and everything is different.? It?s not,? says Libin. ?We bet on this. We hoped that this would be the case,? says Libin, ?and we?re gratified and pleased that it?s coming true.?

Yinxiang Biji now at?4 million users

Libin took to the stage in a keynote at last year?s GMIC Beijing, to announce its entrance into the Chinese market back in 2012 with the introduction of a standalone Chinese version of Evernote called Yinxiang Biji. He says that, one year later, the service is going ?great? with just over 4 million users and more than 17 staff located in the office in Beijing.

?We got that the slow way. There are no tricks. There?s no bundle deals, no weird promotion, just organic word of mouth,? he says.

As a product-focused firm, Evernote isn?t particularly concerned with growing its userbase quickly, and it doesn?t plan on sacrificing its principles any time soon either.

?We don?t want to do a pure marketing collaboration where we?re paying to promote Evernote to other company?s users and we?re selling them data,? says Libin.

The Evernote CEO and founder isn?t offering any clues about what the US firm has on its roadmap, but it its recent?integration with Korea messenger KakaoTalk?is anything to go by, we can expect Asia to continue to be a focus as well as other more ?social? mediums.

Three Ohio women found alive after being missing for a decade; 3 men arrested

WOIO TV via AFP - Getty Images

Amanda Berry (right) was reunited with her sister on Monday after Berry and two other women were found alive in a house in Cleveland, Ohio.

By Andrew Rafferty and Matt DeLuca, NBC News

?Help me, I?m Amanda Berry.?

With one frantic 911 call on Monday evening, three women missing for years were found in a Cleveland house where they had been held against their will by three brothers, police in Ohio said.

?I?ve been kidnapped,? Berry, who disappeared a decade ago, told the dispatcher. ?I?ve been missing for 10 years and I?m out here. I?m free now.?

Authorities heaped praise on Berry, now 27 and the mother of a 6-year-old.

"The real hero here is Amanda," said Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba.

Berry and two other women, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, went missing between 2000 and 2004 in separate incidents. The women were all between the ages of 14 and 20 when they vanished.

Neighbors and relatives celebrated the happy ending, but for some, the years had taken their toll. Berry?s mother died in 2006, not knowing whether her daughter was alive or dead.

Three suspects are under arrest -- former school-bus driver Ariel Castro, 52, and his brothers Pedro, 54, and O'Neal, 50, Cleveland police said. A search warrant related to the arrest was executed by police at an address on Seymour Avenue in Cleveland, police said.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said at a Tuesday press conference that there are many unanswered questions: ?Why were they taken, how they were taken and how they remained undetected in the city of Cleveland for all this time.?

The three women were taken to nearby Metro Health Medical hospital, along with Berry's child, officials said.

All three women were released from the hospital Tuesday morning, the hospital said in a statement, after reporting earlier in the morning that they had been in "fair condition."

?The nightmare is over,? said Cleveland FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen Anthony. ?These three young ladies have provided us with the ultimate definition of survival and perseverance. The healing can now begin.?

?

Amanda Berry, Georgina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight were all kidnapped roughly ten years ago in the Cleveland area and were held captive in a home until yesterday when a neighbor heard Berry screaming for help. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports and former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt discusses the case.

The three disappearances had stumped police in Cleveland and shaken the community for years. Berry was reported missing on April 21, 2003 after she phoned her sister to say she was getting a ride home from her job at a fast food restaurant. About one year after that, 14-year-old DeJesus vanished while walking home from school.

Police said their records showed two visits to the home in recent years. In 2000, they responded to a call about a fight from Ariel Castro. In 2004, after Castro was accused of leaving a child on a bus, authorities went to the house but no one was home.

Authorities said they never stopped looking for the missing women, running down tips and even digging up two backyards. The break came when Berry summoned the courage to escape.

Neighbor Charles Ramsey said he was at home when he saw a man from across the street running to the house next door. When Ramsey went outside, he said, he saw a young woman who said she was trying to escape the house.

?This girl is kicking the door and screaming,? Ramsey said. ?She says, ?I?ve been kidnapped and I?ve been in this house a long time and I want to leave right now.??

Police in Cleveland made an amazing discovery -- three young women who went missing a decade ago were found alive and safe. Rachel Dissell, a reporter for Cleveland Plain Dealer, who's been following this story for 10 years, shares the latest details in the case.

When the door would not open Ramsey helped kick it down, he said, then allowed Berry to call 911. The young woman carried her child through the broken door, and told Ramsey it belonged to her captor. It's unclear who is the child's father.

Police then entered the house and brought out DeJesus and Knight, according to Ramsey.

Police said they have not fully debriefed the victims.

"You can only imagine the scene last night at the hospital with the family and the friends...it was chaotic," Tomba said.

Shocked relatives could hardly believe that their missing family members had been found after so many years.

Michelle Knight?s mother Barbara told The Plain Dealer newspaper that she prayed police had correctly identified her daughter.

"I'm praying that if it is her, she will come back with me so I can help her recover from what she has been through," the hopeful mother said. "So much has happened in these 10 years. She has a younger sister she still has not met. I missed her so much while she was gone."

Destiny Berry, cousin to Amanda, told WKYC: "I just want to see her; I just want to see what she looks like. I just want to hold her."

Destiny and her sister were best friends with Amanda before her disappearance. "We were so close, inseparable. And when she came up missing it killed us. Going 10 years without knowing what happened to her, not knowing anything tears us apart,? she said.

Another of Berry?s cousins, Tasheena Mitchell, told WKYC that she was "so excited.?

The Cleveland Plain Dealer file

Amanda Berry (left) and Gina DeJesus (right) went missing about a decade ago.

"I thought about her every day. I prayed about her every night. I?m just so excited that we?re here. And we?re so close but so far away because they won?t let us in," she said. "I knew that she would come one day. I just don?t understand why it took so long. I?m just happy that she?s here."

The DeJesus family continued to hold out hope, holding vigils for her. DeJesus' mother, Nancy Ruiz, told WKYC at one in April: "She's still out there, and we need to bring her home.?

Earlier this year a prison inmate was sentenced for admitting he gave authorities fraudulent tips about Berry's remains.

Robert Wolford, who is serving time for killing a homeless man, told police the woman was buried under a Cleveland lot, which was then dug up by backhoes.

And two men arrested for questioning about DeJesus' disappearance were released in 2006 after police failed to find the woman's remains during a search of their house.

NBC News' Ian Johnston and John Newland and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

93-year-old U.S. deportee arrested as alleged Auschwitz death camp

BERLIN (AP) ? A 93-year-old man who was deported from the U.S. for lying about his Nazi past was arrested by German authorities Monday on allegations he served as an Auschwitz death camp guard, Stuttgart prosecutors said.

Hans Lipschis was taken into custody after authorities concluded there was "compelling evidence" he was involved in crimes at Auschwitz while there from 1941 to 1945, prosecutor Claudia Krauth said.

Lipschis has acknowledged being assigned to an SS guard unit at Auschwitz but maintains he only served as a cook and was not involved in any war crimes.

Krauth said, however, that a judge upheld her office's request for an arrest warrant after concluding there was enough evidence to hold him before charges on accessory to murder are brought. Bringing formal charges, a process similar to a U.S. grand jury indictment, would take another two months, she said.

In the meantime, Krauth said a doctor has confirmed Lipschis' health remains good enough for him to be kept in detention.

Lipschis does not currently have an attorney, and a public defender has not yet been appointed, she said.

Lipschis was deported from the U.S. in 1983 for lying about his Nazi past when he immigrated to Chicago in the 1950s after the war.

With no evidence linking him to specific war crimes, however, it was impossible under previous German law to bring charges against him in Germany.

But the case is now being pursued on the same legal theory used to prosecute former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, who died last year while appealing his 2011 conviction in Germany for accessory to murder on the grounds that he served as a guard at the Sobibor death camp.

Under the new line of thinking, even without proof of participation in a specific crime, a person who served at a death camp can be charged with accessory to murder because the camp's sole function was to kill people.

Even though the Demjanjuk conviction is not considered legally binding because he died before his appeals were exhausted, the special German prosecutors' office that deals with Nazi crimes has said that about 50 other people in the same category are being investigated.

Efraim Zuroff, the chief Nazi hunter with the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called the arrest of Lipschis ? who is No. 4 on his current list of "most wanted Nazi war criminals" ? a good start.

"This is a very positive step, we welcome the arrest," he said in a telephone interview from Israel. "I hope this will only be the first of many arrests, trials and convictions of death camp guards."

In an interview last month with Die Welt newspaper at his home in southwestern Germany, Lipschis said he spent his entire time as a cook and had witnessed none of the atrocities. He did say, however, that he "heard about" what was going on.

About 1.5 million people, primarily Jews, were killed at the Auschwitz camp complex between 1940 and 1945.
