Who are they?
The original bedroom recordings of Nathan Rekker, Sports has contained members of The Meligrove Band, By Divine Right, The Diableros and Sheezer. The current lineup consists of Nathan Rekker (vocals, guitars, synths), Michael Small (bass), Shayne Cox (drums) and Pete Carmichael (guitar). A previous incarnation from 2006 to 2009 included Robin Hatch on keys and vocals. (When I saw them play in 2009, Hatch kept joking that her oversized fascinator made her look like Aretha Franklin at Obama's inauguration.) The band formed when Rekker and Small were roommates in the Annex in 2004. After gleefully coining themselves "Sports: The Band", they produced a five-song EP in 2007, later released on CD in 2009. After Hatch left the band, Sports went on hiatus until they recruited ex-Diableros member Carmichael. In early January they released their first self-titled full-length via Bandcamp.?
What do they sound like?
Like sunny FM radio gold. Inspired by everything from Sloan to My Bloody Valentine, Sports use waves of distortion and anthemic harmonies to create cheery Can-pop. On the bouncy "Slacking Scholar" the band hints at their frustration ("No one gives a damn about your new band," sings Rekker) with heals quickly with a slinky guitar solo. On "This Tree" a surf rock psychedelia pervades. The innovative production on their debut LP loves to revel in pulsating Fender Rhodes solos and rusty guitars, pushing songs that might otherwise sound too cottage rock into murkier alternative territory. (I love the Joy Division-meets-Guided By Voices quality of "Light.") Rekker's voice is reedy and impassioned and Sports' chemistry is tight. They're in it to win it.?
When can I see them live?
Sports play the Wavelength Music Series food drive at The Garrison (1197 Dundas St. W.) this Thursday, Dec. 29 alongside OPOPO, Holy Mount, This Mess and Soft Copy. The show starts at 9 p.m. and admission is either $5 or three non-persishable food items.?
